The Makeup Brushes you Do and Don't Need

Beginner Makeup Brushes you Do and Don't need

If there's one thing the beauty industry loves, it's convincing you that you need more.

More brushes.
More shapes.
More collections.
More "must-haves."

Before you know it, you've somehow accumulated seventeen eyeshadow brushes that all look exactly the same... and you still have no idea which one you're supposed to use.

So let's simplify it.

If you're just getting into makeup, I promise you don't need a brush for every square centimetre of your face. A small collection of versatile, quality brushes will take you much further than a drawer full of marketing jargon.

Here are the brushes I genuinely believe every beginner should own.

Fluffy Blending Brush

If I could only keep one eyeshadow brush, this would be it.

A fluffy blending brush does exactly what its name suggests. It blends, softens harsh edges and helps eyeshadow melt seamlessly into the skin.

It's forgiving, beginner-friendly and almost impossible to mess up.

Flat Shader Brush

This is your colour-packing brush.

Whenever you want maximum pigment on the eyelid, this is the one you'll reach for. Instead of sweeping product away, it presses colour exactly where you want it.

Firm Crease Brush

Once you've mastered the fluffy blender, this brush lets you become more precise.

It's perfect for adding depth to the crease, building dimension and placing darker shadows exactly where you want them.

Detail Smudge Brush

Small but mighty.

Perfect for smoking out eyeliner, blending underneath the lower lashes or adding tiny pops of shimmer to the inner corner.

This is the brush that makes makeup look intentional.

Flat Concealer Brush

Despite the name, I use this brush for far more than concealer.

It's brilliant for cleaning up eyeshadow, carving out sharp edges, applying glitter primer or even placing shimmer exactly where you want maximum impact.

Angled Liner Brush

Whether you're using gel liner, eyeshadow or brow products, an angled brush gives you precision without needing a perfectly steady hand.

It's one of those brushes you'll end up using more than you expected.

Foundation Buffing Brush

One of the hardest-working brushes in any kit.

Dense enough to blend liquid foundation beautifully, but equally good with cream products and even powders.

If you're only buying one complexion brush, make it this one.

Large Powder Brush

This is your finishing brush.

Perfect for setting powder, bronzer or simply dusting away excess product.

Think of it as the brush that brings everything together.

Precision Blush Brush

Don't let the name fool you.

This shape is beautiful for blush, but it's equally good for bronzer, contour and even softly setting under the eyes.

The tapered shape gives you much more control than an oversized powder brush.

Duo Fibre Face Brush

The ultimate multitasker.

The lighter fibres create a softer, airbrushed finish, making this brush perfect for blush, bronzer, cream products and skin prep.

It's one of my favourite brushes when I want makeup to look like skin.

Here's the Secret Nobody Talks About...

Brushes don't know what they're "supposed" to do.

Seriously.

Some of my favourite makeup looks happened because I completely ignored the label on the handle.

I use powder brushes to blend foundation.

I use fluffy eyeshadow brushes to apply highlighter.

I use concealer brushes to apply shimmer.

There are no makeup police coming to arrest you because you used your blush brush for bronzer.

The best brush is the one that helps you achieve the look you're trying to create.

Forget the marketing.

Forget the rules.

Experiment.

Play.

And use whatever feels right in your hand.

Because makeup should feel creative, not complicated.
